Debunking 4 false myths about e-bikes and e-mobility
- Published on 24 Apr 2022
Despite the fact that e-bikes are revolutionising the two-wheeled world and that sales have increased fivefold in the last five years (from 50,000 units per year to 280,000 per year), there are still those who have doubts about them.
In order to clarify and show how – very often – perceptions differ from reality, we have decided to collect and dispel the 4 most widespread false myths about ebikes and e-mobility.
Maintenance is complex
Even with the addition of the motor, the anatomy of ebikes does not change compared to conventional bikes. They have two wheels with cranks, pedals and a transmission system.
With the exception of the battery and motor, ebikes require the same maintenance as conventional bikes.
A well-maintained bike is less prone to problems. However, the most common mechanical problem is that of a puncture or battery failure. Thanks to the Bike Facilities maintenance and charging infrastructure, both of these problems can be solved in a few simple steps.
Charging takes a short time
Running ‘dry’ is never good. Today’s batteries are getting smaller, lighter and, above all, more durable, thus guaranteeing a longer range. Manufacturers guarantee up to 100 kilometres of autonomy with light and constant assistance for sporting activities and easing the difficulty of climbs or the force of a headwind.
And recharging takes only a few hours and costs very little. The latter also opens the door to the next false myth.
If you want to read more about this, we talked about it in this article: ‘Everything you need to know about ebikes and charging and maintenance columns‘.
If the battery runs out, you are left stranded
In spite of the battery running out, you can still pedal just like on any other type of bike. What’s more – at any time – you can check the battery level and the displays on the handlebars to see how much energy is left. So you always know when it is convenient to stop for recharging or to continue without running the risk of running out.
E-bikes are not environmentally friendly
E-bikes are to all intents and purposes classified as zero-emission vehicles, their use especially in urban areas has significant environmental benefits such as reducing harmful emissions and traffic congestion.
In addition, manufacturers are working to increase the life of lithium-ion batteries and thus reduce their environmental impact.
This is why at Bike Facilities we help public administrations, companies and individual businesses every day to find the best solution to be more bike friendly and sustainable.
