Journey towards a sustainable future

In 2024, the Bergamo-Brescia cycle route was inaugurated, marking an important step towards a sustainable future. This ambitious project, in fact, aims to enhance the Lombardy region and promote more ecological mobility among inhabitants and visitors.

The cycle route not only allows people to rediscover the natural and cultural beauty of the areas surrounding the cities of Bergamo and Brescia (2023 Culture Capitals), but also represents an environmentally friendly solution for transport.

An idea that becomes reality

Considered a complex challenge for Lombardy’s system of governance, the construction of the Bergamo-Brescia cycle route has seen the collaboration of numerous bodies, including the Ministry of Culture, the Lombardy Region, the Provinces of Bergamo and Brescia, together with 27 municipalities, parks, superintendencies, consortia and foundations.

The reasons that drove these entities to work together are many:

• Territory Enhancement: The route crosses evocative landscapes and areas of historical and cultural interest, allowing cyclists to discover lesser-known places and appreciate the richness of the local heritage.
• Promotion of Gentle Mobility: The dedicated bicycle infrastructure encourages the use of non-polluting means of transport, improving the quality of urban life and reducing traffic congestion.
• Environmental Sustainability: Cycling contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to the car and helping to reduce air pollution.
• Health and Well-being: Promoting cycling encourages a more active and healthy lifestyle, with physical and mental benefits for citizens.

Love for two wheels. An inclusive passion

Linking the dynamic cities of Bergamo and Brescia, the 76 kilometres of the main route (rings and collateral links bring the Bergamo-Brescia cycle route to a total length of up to 170 kilometres) connect two important UNESCO sites: the Venetian Walls of Bergamo and the San Salvatore and Santa Giulia complex in Brescia. This route also passes through numerous villages and places of historical and cultural interest.

• 170 kilometres in total: 76 km of the main route, 70 km of loops, 19 km of links and 8 km of tourist walking routes.

Sportsmen, tourists and cycling enthusiasts in general are the main target groups of this cycle route, a project also designed to embrace values such as inclusion and accessibility.
In order to make the route even more transversal and easily accessible to anyone (regardless of their athletic training or physical condition), in fact, the planners who coordinated the construction of the Bergamo-Brescia have taken care to disseminate cycle shops, rentals, digital guides and recharging stations along the route.
